How to Outsmart the Algorithm on Social Media
How can you outsmart the algorithm on your social media platforms? What kind of action should you take daily? What should you post about? When should you post? How should you engage with others?
These are the questions I hear most often and my answer is “Engage”! In other words, if you want people to engage with you, you need to engage with them! And you need to be consistent. It won’t help your brand’s growth if you only post once a month or tweet once a year. Many factors are considered when FB or IG decide whom to show posts to and much of it is based on an “Affinity Score”.
All platforms only allow a small percentage of your posts to be seen by your fans and followers. To outsmart the algorithm you have to post consistently and engage with others. Learn more about the affinity score in this blog by DotDigital “Lifting the Lid on AI: What Affinity Scores Mean for Marketers”.
Consistent posting and engagement drive the affinity rating. To outsmart the algorithm, take action on social media every day by following these simple, time-saving guidelines.
Facebook—The affinity score means a lot to FB’s algorithms. If you don’t engage with others, the likelihood of them seeing your posts is slim. Read that blog post I linked above!
- Write daily posts on your newsfeed. At a minimum, you’ll want to post three times weekly.
- Add content to “stories” several times per week. Stories are awesome! Are you posting content to Stories?
- Write two to three comments on a dozen relevant posts in Facebook groups and on FB posts.
- Like and comment on 5 posts.
Instagram—Read my blog on why you need to use hashtags on IG! Without them, it’ll be challenging to grow your platform.
- Post to IG daily whether on posts, stories, reels, or IGTV.
- Include relevant hashtags. Up to 30 are allowed; try to target at least 15 per post and change them up monthly.
- Find your ideal client (or tribe) on Instagram by searching for hashtags they might use. Follow them and like their three most recent photos.
- Leave a comment on your followers’ most recent photo. Something like: Beautiful work!
- Engage with 10 to 20 posts.
Twitter—We think of Twitter as a micro news blogging channel.
- Tweet frequently.
- Always include a compelling image and always use hashtags.
- Engage, engage, engage. Reply, retweet, and tag others!
- Create an inviting profile. What does your profile say about you?
- Participate in Twitter chats.

- GBP is the go-to way to improve your local search engine optimization. If you’re a local business, be sure to post to this platform twice weekly.
- Review the insights! What’s working, what’s not? Are your calls-to-action getting engagement? Are you getting phone calls, visitors, or requests for directions?
